Desk Interview Etiquettes That You Must Know.

A Desk interview is not an official job interview; it is a Cool Way to Get Your Foot in the Door. But you need to know how to ‘Desk’ Read. In the shareholder meeting, your ‘Monitor’ will present a multi-page list of questions to be asked of you over the coming ten minutes or so.

Some of these questions may be very technical and others may be more personal, such as your name and occupation. You will need to refer to a prep supplier’s Brochure when you are assigned a ‘ Partner List ‘ and the company meeting minutes. Your time is valuable. We have all worked long hours for less pay. So, it is both an opportunity to earn some extra kudos at work and to reduce the feeling of worthlessness if you have been delayed.

There are some etiquette/ manners rules which need to be mastered. They are:

  • Do not take unnecessary risks with email and telephone calls.
  • Do not answer the call on the pretext that you are busy, even if you really are.
  • Never interrupt the person interviewing you.
  • Do not place your hands behind your back when you are talking.
  • Look sideways when you are looking the person in the eye.
  • Control your body language.
  • Point upwards when addressing, e.g. Master of the House.
  • Maintain eye contact during the telephone interview.

There are certain questions that you can prepare in the advance. I’m sharing here the list of the questions that are frequently asked during an interview: How are you? Did you find out about this job on the internet? Where did you hear about it? Who referred you? What are the conditions you are looking for?

You aim to move the conversation towards your perceived interests and skills. Do not say the ‘I’ word or ‘Like’ anything. Do not enclose photos or other examples of your work. Try and give examples of how you may benefit the company, depending on what skills and knowledge they are seeking.

Let’s talk about the dress code during the interview:

Men: Must wear a suit.

Women: Can wear heels but no veiling—makeup: bold, with a goal. The shirts should be white. Shoes should be black, and shoes should be a conservative pump or a more dressy type.

Communications: Answering an interview is just one part of the communications process. The written word must be honoured. Improve your communication skills, read faster newspapers, listen to records, and write a blog. The written word includes the Checklist above. Be clear and concise.
